About The Author

Sharon Russell-Robinson

Sharon Russell-Robinson was born and reared in the small farming town of Tchula, Mississippi, which is part of the Mississippi Delta and Blues capital of the World. She was always drawn to the creative side of life by performing in various song and dance talent competitions and became a local superstar, but her true talent was in her writing. She knew early in life her family Mantra was to be, “ To have what you never had before, you gotta do what you never done before.” She wrote her first unpublished short story in 3rd grade and her first play in 6th grade. She Published her first Poem in “America At The Millenium: The Best Poems and Poets of The 20th Century, now in the International Library of Poetry. She graduated with honors from S.V. Marshall High School and received her B.S. Degree in Mass Communications/Advertising & Graphic Design from the home of the World renowned Marching Band “THEE Sonic Boom OF THE South”, Jackson State University in Jackson, Mississippi. Sharon worked in her field of study for exactly (1) year, but fondly recalls finding her true calling in Human Resources for 25 Years.

Sharon loves every bit of the “Human” aspect of interacting with folk and family. She began thinking about writing her debut children’s book The Adventures of River and her Whoobie over 20 years ago as she watched her daughter grow. Her daughter inspired the idea, because of how she navigated through her insecurities, trials, and tribulations from childhood to adulthood. She also showed that when children utilize their imagination, they tend to grow in more ways than one can ever imagine and if fostered in a positive way, possibilities for a bountiful future are endless. She wants to share that it is ok for them to believe in the fantasy world if it taps into their creative side and view of the world because she believes imagination is the truest form of realism for one without the other is just a daydream.

Now, with the titles of Human Resources Professional, and more importantly, mother and especially “Madear” under her belt and living every fun-filled moment of the daily journey, she feels it is time to share her perspective with the world. The Title of Madear is a coveted title in Sharon’s family because her own Madear help rear her and she vowed to her that if she were ever given the chance, she would honor her in that manner. Writing and bringing children’s books to life with the aid of beautiful illustrations allows the world to see and understand the beauty of her past and how it shaped the artistry within her work today.

When Sharon is not writing and spending time with her husband, children and grandchildren during their many adventures, she enjoys martial arts, antique shopping, “mud riding” verry slowly, movies and traveling to beautiful places all over the world. One of her favorite things to say is that when life gives you lemonade, make lemons and watch life go “whoa”!!

About The Book

The Adventures of River and Her Whoobie

“The Adventures of River and Her Whoobie” By Sharon Russell-Robinson is a heartwarming children’s book that follows the journey of a shy and fearful little girl named River. With her special friend Whoobie, always by her side, River navigates the challenges of growing up and facing the big, big world.

The story begins with River receiving Whoobie from her Granny, a soft and fluffy companion that brings comfort and sweetness to her life. Through various stages of River’s growth, Whoobie remains a constant source of support, cheering her on during moments of fear and uncertainty.

The narrative beautifully illustrates the strong bond between River and Whoobie as they play, watch TV, eat, and face new experiences together. Whoobie becomes more than just a companion; it symbolizes the soft hugs and kisses of River’s Mommy, providing solace in times of sadness or fear.

As River’s Adventures unfold, the book offers valuable tips for parents to help children navigate insecurities. It emphasizes reassurance, resilience, encouragement, and the importance of acknowledging efforts rather than accomplishments.

Ultimately, “The Adventures of River and Her Whoobie” is a delightful tale celebrating the power of friendship, comfort, and familial support in overcoming fears and insecurities. Sharon Russell–Robinson’s storytelling is infused with warmth and empathy, making it an engaging read for both children and parents alike.

What others are saying

This beautiful and realistic book, The Adventures of River and Her Whoobie explores the mind of a little girl and her stuffed animal through the lens of their relationship. My son has a plush bear similar to Whoobie and calls it "Bear Bear." This story brings back memories of those times. Bear goes everywhere he goes, and he has even lost him on a few occasions, but he always seems to find his way back home with him. This book is timely because it helps parents realize children's desire to have the emotional support and stability that particular objects bring. This is especially helpful for parents who are dealing with a child who has attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). A remarkable debut for Russell Robinson as a writer for children's literature!

The Adventures of River and Her Woobie is a story that closely touches my personal feelings. I identify and share the feelings, the impact, and the indelible marks a child makes to a mother. The visualization and progressive discovery of meaning something has to a child. Their innocence and amazing imagination that many of us wish they never lose or give up through life changes. It is an evermore remarkable fact that it is written in two languages reaching a much larger audience. It is an outstanding addition and it has become a preferred title in my grandchildren's library! Thank you Ms. Robinson for sharing this story with me.

The Adventures of River and Her Whoobie is a delightful and realistic book that delves in the psyche of a little girl and her stuffed animal. In this post-pandemic world, this book is timely because it helps parents understand childrens' need to have the emotional support and security that some objects offer.
